How to measure waist for pants
Measure over undergarments, tape snug but not digging in.
- Find your natural waist (or where you wear the pants).
- Keep the tape level all the way around.
- Note the cm and inches — brands may use either.
- Jeans often shrink slightly; check the brand fit notes.
- Rise (high/mid/low) changes where you measure.

How pants waist sizes are converted
Most casual pants are graded from a waist circumference. Labels then print inches, centimetres, or continental numbers that approximate that waist.
Through waist inches
US and UK casual wear usually show waist inches (32, 34…). We convert other systems to inches first, then emit US/UK, EU, IT, and cm. Men’s EU is approximated as inches + 16.
Men vs women charts
Women’s numbering and vanity sizing differ — select the chart that matches the garment. Rise (high/mid/low) changes where the waistband sits, so the same number can feel different.
Inseam is separate
Length (inseam or EU length codes) is chosen independently of waist. This tool converts waist only.
What we do not model
No stretch recovery, shrink after wash, or brand fit names (skinny vs relaxed). Prefer the brand’s centimetre chart when available.
